16th & 17th January: Cabin in the Woods

We had a big fight in the group in the morning so we left Las Vegas an hour late and the 2 cars with 3 people each went off independently. First we visited Red Rock Canyon and did the scenic drive and some walking.

We also encountered some interesting plants. We assume that both pictures show the same plant at different states.

The rest of our day consisted mainly of driving – 7 hours in total. We only stopped at two gas stations for petrol and to eat. We discovered that most gas stations had microwaves and also here it was no problem to heat up our food. Although, I found the food they offered very fascinating.

We actually met the other guys on the road close to our next Airbnb, where we arrived at around 19:00. We had planned not to arrive too late as we wanted to enjoy our cabin in the woods. I joked that we are destined to be murdered tonight as we already split up before actually entering the cabin.

We prepared the fire, ate and went to bed very early. Thankfully, the cabin remained in peace apart from the rain that continued for the whole night.

On 17th January, our 5th day on the road, O’Sol had to get some work done so we had decided that we will depart later and have a slow morning with some working time. It was a rainy day anyway, so we skipped Sequoia National Park and had only 3 hours of driving to our next Airbnb. We departed together at around 11:00. We noticed consequences of the heavy rain on the road, like mud at several occasions. A bit scary, but also fascinating was a piece of flooded road we had to cross.

Some photos from the road:

At the gas station where we stopped to get some fuel there were several police cars and some policeman emptying a normal car. Of course we wondered what had happened and the guy from the petrol station told us that the police had just arrested two gang members and found drugs and guns in that car that they were emptying. In a way, I was a bit disappointed we couldn’t witness the arrest, but maybe that would have been a bit too frightening.

So a day that we expected to be a rather “boring” one turned out to be quite interesting. At around 17:00 we reached our awesome Airbnb house and had plenty of time to relax and work.
